Hard Luggage on an '06-'07 ZX10R

One of the problems with owning a sportbike today is that there are no good hard luggage options. Sure there are some half ass attempts but nothing comes close to having a topcase or sidecases for trips or commuting. I saw a setup from another guy on zx-10r.net and the best part is you can do this on any sportbike with a split seat ;) Parts needed: Givi Monolock topcase and base, some stainless bolts and screws, a few carriage washers, a drillbit the size of your bolts, spray paint, and some thin weather stripping. I forgot to mention that you have to sacrifice your rear seat to the MacGyver gods, but they're cheap on Fleabay if you need to replace it. Let's get started....

First you need to tear the cover and foam off your rear seat. Pull all the staples out and try to sand down as much of the surface of the base as you can for the spray paint to stick to it. Then I put the Givi Monolock base on the top of the seat to figure out the best place to drill the holes for the mount. The seat base has all kinds of little walls and uneven surfaces to help with it's rigidity, you can see in the picture on the right where I picked a good spot for the holes.

Drill the holes and then paint the complete top and edges. I put a few coats on and it still scratched off in places, I may repaint it eventually. While the base is drying you can start prepping the carriage washers. I used a grinder to make them square to fit in the black honeycombs of the Givi base. Once you're done with that and the paint is dry, you can start assembly. Don't overtighten the bolts, you'll jack up the base. Then it's on to putting the weather stripping around the bottom edge of the seat. If you never ride in the rain don't worry about it...but if you commute in rain or shine like me...do it. You can also see my half ass attempt at trying to tighten up the slop of the seat base. You can see the electric tape in the right picture I used on the mounts of the seat base to stop it from moving around once installed on the bike. I'll probably install some heat shrink tubing and double sided tape when I get around to it.
