Sirius satellite radio on a '00 ZX9R
I have been getting sick of carrying around an ipod, a boostaroo,
and cable to hook up with my helmet speakers especially in bad weather. Since
I don't have a waterproof container for the equipment it has to ride in my
stitch chest pocket...PITA. I have also hit my wits end with Apple's horrible
shuffle algorithm. I have almost 1K songs in my nano and it replays the same songs
repeatedly, kinda defeats the purpose of shuffle. These issues brought me to my
latest finding that Sirius satellite radio is the best thing since sliced bread.
I tried XM...it sucked and still had commercials. My coworker loves his Sirius and
once I looked at their lineup the decision was easy. I recently went down to Dallas
on a business trip and could not find a decent radio station..so I went straight to
a Radio Shack and bought a plug n play Sirius setup. I shelled out @$100 for the
radio and 3 months of service...not to shabby. The stations kick butt, I am
definately hooked plus they offer Internet streaming as well. The next dilemna
will be mounting this radio on the bike...hmmm that'll be interesting.
Since RAM hasn't steered me astray yet I hit them first..here comes GPScity.com.
WOW !!!! RAM makes a waterproof box for electronics called an Aqua Box. I knew they'd
come through as usual. Looks like the
medium box will fit my Sirius radio. Hmmm...the next challenge
is how I power it, connect the antenna, and hear the audio.
Powering it is covered by my fuse block, I'll mount the antenna under my double
bubble, and hearing the audio....that's a tough one. This was a perfect time to
look into dumping the boostaroo and extra crap that I have to carry around for the
ipod. I've heard a few good things about sound isolating earplugs and great writeups
of the ER-6's. These allow me to drop the boostaroo and the helmet
speakers for 1 piece of hardware. The mute button goes as well, but since I can
control whatever device I'm listening to that problem is quickly solved. Wait a sec,
that's solved but I can't wire the ER-6's into the Aqua Box and leave them attached
to the bike. I needed a headphone extension with an L plug...which was actually harder
to find than I thought. Ebay came through with one for $4.99 and my fairing stay will
be getting a new zip tied accessory real quick. Well it looks like I'm all done, now
it's time for the install.
No instructions included from GPScity.com but easily found through RAM.

I used the mount I had for the GPS which only has 2 holes...time to silicon the
extra holes to keep the waterproofness in tact.

The rest of the install was relatively easy. Placement was a PITA as I'd either
be blocking too much of the speedo, keyhole, or hitting the fairing stay.
I finally found the perfect spot. The final product with the headphone extension
ziptied to the fairing stay

P.S. This setup works real well for ipods as well. I've been toting mine for those times
that I want to listen to specific artists. Enjoy !!!1
