'98-'01 VFR Radar Detector RAM Mount Install
Having the radar detector in the tankbag sucked...and since I was trying
to eliminate the tankbag from my daily commute it was counter productive.
After an exhaustive search for a suitable mount, I realized that I already
had a sufficient one. I had already acquired a RAM mount for my Sony digital
camera for short mpegs on the road...now all I needed was a new platform for
the detector. I found a suitable platform through GPScity.com
and you can see my setup below. It's an extension plate (1 - NPI RAM Aluminum
1'' Ball Cradle Extension Plate ONLY (RAM-B-125BU)) regularly used as a mount
point, but it was perfect for this application. As you can see I have some
spiral wire loom (Radio Shack) covering the wires that are ziptied to the
RAM mount. The bottom of the mount fits perfectly on the tank bolts (1 inch
ball on a U bolt, I think it's this one
RAM 231). You chuck the U bolt and the top fits perfectly between those tank
bolts. The long piece is a RAM
201 I think, just make sure it's for a 1 inch ball and you're golden.
I velcroed the detector onto the mount and am using an old velcro watch band
as backup in case the velcro fails. I am also using a plastic cover (aka rain
condom) which is a Saran Wrap Quick Cover normally used for bowls...the smallest
` one works perfectly on the detector. It's to prevent detector drowning if
I get caught in the rain while riding. This cover is not waterproof at all...so
don't even try to use it if it's already raining when you leave ;)
