Western WA, Mt. St. Helens Area
FR25 is an example of the incredible roads in Western WA and is quickly becoming
one of my favorite rides. Just get to Randle,WA however you can and FR25 is
the intersection with a diner on one side and the Texaco (will become a Shell)
on the other. Unfortunately this road attracts all the squids and a good amount
of traffic in the simmer as it's the only way to the blast zone on Mt St.
Helens, so go early and preferably on off days. Go in a group as I've seen
the road eat people a few times but it's worth every twisty many times over.
The wrecks are usually due to a few decreasing radius turns (namely 3) that
people usually go into too hot...be wary especially if it's your first time
on the road. There are no surprises on the first part of the road to FR99
(another awesome road) after that are the 3 surprises, but if you take it
easy the first time you'll be cool. I rate the road an 8 out of 10 due to
occasional traffic, the surprises, and occasional crap on the road to make
things interesting. Make a day of it and go from Randle to Cougar and you'll
have a >450 day with tons of twisties, worth every turn
FR99
FR99 is another example of the beauty of Western WA combined with unbelievable
twisties. You'll be grinning fom ear to ear once you get to the top of this
road ;) This route used to be my favorite but due to occasional washouts and
traffic it's degraded on my scale to a 7. Depending on the time of year you
hit it you can find gravel, mud, and other crap on the road...which makes
it very sketchy with no guardrails and 1 to 200 foot drops off some corners.
If you wreck on this road it can be the end literally...so take it easy, especially
on the way down. This is one of the few roads that I've been on that has back
to back twisties in opposite directions. You like the chicanes on some tracks
in which guys are quickly slamming it through alternating corners...well you
can do it on this road traffic permitting. Spirit Lake and the blast zone
are incredible...the view is worth it even when there's tons of traffic and
crap on the road, a definite must do for any twisty-haulic.
